They weren't there now. They weren't being rebuilt, either. The two were being replaced by one, a massive monument that would tower even larger then they had. But, the progress was slow on Ground Zero, and the tower was still in its initial phase of building. Construction workers were already to work on their long task, which would last them far longer then just the next few months. Tourists and passers by stopped to read signs that dotted the sidewalk, telling of the horrific events of this same day seven whole years ago, and the plans to build the monument that would dominate the New York skyline in place of the Twin Towers that fell on that very spot.
On this scene, Superman descended, an enormous bouquet of flowers in his hand. He lowered his head for a moment, saying a prayer for those poor souls before laying the red rose buds down on the ground by the gate that separated the general public from the construction site. With a light sigh, the Man of Steel rose into the air once more, heading off to try and save the world from facing other disasters like this one.
In loving memory of all the real-life heroes who gave their lives trying to help others on September 11, 2001. May they forever rest in peace and their legacy never be forgotten.
